About Stay Puff

90's Rap Tribute

Stay Puff is the brainchild of New Orleans bass player Jake Brigell. Born in the 80s, the moniker was graciously given to him by kids on a grade school playground as a constant reminder of how similar his visage was to a certain giant marshmallow man from the 1984 smash hit Ghostbusters. Jake eventually grew into this appellation after hearing Biggie’s bellicose flow.

Coming of age in the 90s Jake listened to all the pop rap at the time. Dr Dre, JayZ, Biggie, Nas, 2pac, Snoop, Bone Thugz N Harmony just to name a few. Later, in the early 2000’s, conscious rap became his thing. Artists such as: All Natural, Common, Atmosphere, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, Talib Kweli, Jurrassic 5.

From a youth filled with hip hop to an adulthood playing in professional bands, Stay Puff traced the lineage of rap music. Through hundreds of live gigs on Frenchmen street in New Orleans he learned many of the original songs sampled in his favorite eras of hip hop, and what it was that made the people dance. Genres can be bent any which way. Stay Puff wants to know what music makes you FEEL.
